Mia Gammelgaard


Mia Gammelgaard was born in Stockholm 1964 and graduated in furniture design from Konstfackskolan, Stockholm (1986-1991). In 1988 she studied at The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. When graduating from Konstfackskolan she recieved an award, making it possible for her to come to Blå Station in Åhus, Sweden and work with Börje Lindau and his family.

In 1993 she joined the group Design Studio Copenhagen, an externally based Ikea studio. Alongside product developing for Ikea she worked with the Ikea exhibition “Democratic Design” in Milan, New York and Singapore.

Since 1996 she has been freelancing for Ikea and has over the years made an unknown number of products. At the same time, Mia became partner in the design studio Pelikan Copenhagen – a partnership that lasted for ten years, resulting in many projects, and a client portfolio consisting of Svedbergs, van Esch, Zero, Lustrum, Danerka, Erik Jørgensen etc. In 2006 she set up a studio of her own; Mia Gammelgaard Design. Recent project is Meccano table and Bowl for Functionals, Hippo and Taylor for Blå Station and upcoming news at Orgatec 2012 for van Esch. 2011 Mia was among four other danish designer invited by the Danish Arts Foundation Committee for Crafts and Design, to take part in the prestigious competion of making new furniture for the Trusteeship Council Chamber, also called the Finn Juhl chamber, in the UN building, New York. Recently she became Chairman of the Danish association SE, Snedkernes Efterårsudstilling, and will for the next exhibition opening on 1st of November at Thorvaldsens Museum, DK show a new chair together with Hay. She has during the years been awarded with Red Dot, Excellent Swedish Design and Elle Interiör Design Prize.
